Detailed information on Model FD 183 Chair by Arne Vodder for France & Daverkosen, (1960s) Denmark (2 Available)

Arne Vodder (1926-2009) for France & Daverkosen  Pair of Model \'FD 183\' chairs, circa 1960. Manufacturer\'s plaque to frame.

Measures 87cm high, 51cm wide

Provenance  Property of James France, of France & Son

What makes these chairs particularily special is their provenance: they were owned by James France, son of Charles France, and a central figure in the evolution of the company that later became France & Søn.

France & Daverkosen was founded in Denmark in the late 1940s by Charles France and Eric Daverkosen. They were early pioneers in producing high-quality modern furniture for export, helping to define the look and feel of Danish mid-century design. As the company grew, James France joined the business and played a key role in its development, eventually leading to its renaming as France & Søn in the 1950s.

Arne Vodder, a close collaborator of the company, designed many pieces that are now icons of Danish modernism. The FD183 is a beautiful example: modest yet sculptural, with soft curves and precise detailing. Reupholstering these chairs was a joy, Emily has captured the process in this lovely video. I\'ve chosen a green wool tweed by Camira Fabrics that feels both fresh and timeless, adding warmth while respecting the original design.
