Detailed information on Malay Candan

Malaysian agarwood stands alone in the world of oud.

No other region has produced as many legendary oils from such a small footprint. Its pristine forests and diversity of species gave rise to some of the most coveted distillations in history — yet today, high grade Malaysian material is all but gone. Recreating the great oils of the past is no longer possible.

This is why we pursue what still exists: vintage aged oils, family heirlooms, gifts once bestowed by Sheikhs and Sultans, alongside our own carefully aged distillations.

Among Malaysia\'s agarwood species, Candan (Aquilaria hirta) occupies a place of its own. Found on the highland slopes of Peninsular Malaysia, this single species is responsible for some of the most celebrated oils to emerge from the region. Today, Candan oils routinely trade at several times their original prices, with serious collectors moving quickly when old stocks surface.

One encounter with the aroma explains everything.

An opening of deep incense and smoke gives way swiftly to something unexpected; a sweet, creamy warmth layered with dark berries, caramel, sugarcane and a lingering note of liquor.
