Story Behind the Art: Tibetan rug making spans centuries of domestic and ceremonial use, drawing on auspicious symbols, protective animals, and stylized florals to create textiles rich with meaning. After 1959, as Tibetan communities resettled in Nepal and India, the craft entered a new era: refugee ateliers revived techniques and trained local artisans, helping the tradition flourish on an international stage by the 1970s. A hallmark of the genre is the Tibetan knot, a specialized looping method that yields a dense, velvety pile and tactile depth. Today’s Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indo-Tibetan pieces reinterpret snow lions, clouds, and lotus medallions alongside modern, freeform graphics—bridging sacred heritage and contemporary design.
